Follicular Hair Transplant
Follicular hair transplants provide lasting, natural results. Using proven techniques supported by the latest research and technology, doctors at NHI work with your existing hair to create real regrowth.
This method works with naturally occurring groups of hair that grow together, referred to as follicular units. Strands do not actually grow singly, but in groups of up to four.
During follicular hair transplants, existing groups are dissected from the scalp in the smallest size possible. This small size allows grafts to be placed without damaging sebaceous glands and other important appendages, maximising the likelihood of a high growth rate.
Follicular Hair Transplant Methods
The two types of follicular hair transplant performed at NHI are FUG and FUE – grafting and extraction.
- FUG works by removing a narrow strip of from the back of the scalp, which is then dissected into small strand groupings that are then implanted on the areas where regrowth is desired.
- The latest method, FUE, extracts individual groupings which are then planted in the same way as done in FUG. A small linear scar – usually of around 1.5–2 mm – will be left by FUG, however this can usually be covered with a number 3 clipper length cut.
But Which Type is Better?
Whilst FUE appealingly does not leave any linear scarring, it may not be the best method for all patients. Due to the time-consuming nature of extraction, fewer groupings can be taken and implanted in a single session.
A higher degree of thinning may require a greater number of grafts. Using FUG, up to 6,000 transplants can be made in a single session, while only 600–800 FUE grafts can be made. As such, FUE would require a greater number of sessions, at a higher cost, for the same effect.
